All Bucyrus hydraulic excavators are built to a modular design and have the following distinctive technical features:

The TriPower linkage is the characteristic of each face shovel and is the central pivot point for boom and bucket cylinders and for the connecting rod to the superstructure. The TriPower function increases the crowd forces, provides automatically constant bucket control, adds up to the lift force and boosts up production.

The Twin Engine concept is another technical feature of these excavators. The large units from RH90 and above are equipped with twin engine drive in the diesel version. There is an optional electric drive version available using a single motor (except the largest RH 400, which is equipped with 2 motors). The advantage of the twin engine concept is that the excavators are kept fully operational even if one engine should fall.

The main valve block location on top of the boom provides good accessibility, better visibility and less hydraulic lines between boom and superstructure.

The Bord Control System is a cost saving diagnostic feature using state-of-the-art electronics to monitor and record all important operating and servicing data, displaying the findings on the monitor. As soon as any variances are detected, the operator is alerted visually and audibly. Trouble-shooting is made much more easier and downtimes are avoided.

The other distinctive features include: the independent oil cooling system providing continuous cooling; the patented Pump Management System with electronic load limit control, which ensures almost zero-loss conversion of engine power into hydraulic output; automatic central lubrication system.
